Mid Semester Break: Primeval: New World

Primeval New WorldI hope you’re all having a good break!

First off, congratulations to everyone on a really successful bake sale! We raised more than $500 for the New Zealand trip, and delicious baked goods were had by all. Thank you so much to everyone who baked treats and helped staff the stall during the day. Special recognition should go to Jen in particular, for organizing the sale and making the whole thing happen. This was SpockSoc’s first public event outside of O-week in quite a while, and it went really well.
For those of you who haven’t gone home, SpockSoc will still be there this week. We’ll be continuing with Season One of Primeval: New World, a Canadian spinoff of the original British series, Primeval.

Primeval: New World follows the Special Projects Group of Cross Photonics, a team of animal experts and scientists led by visionary inventor Evan Cross, as they investigate the Anomalies, disturbances in space and time that bring creatures from the past forward into the present. The team attempts to combat the creatures which come through, and send them back before they alter the course of history.

We’ll be meeting at Macauley Theatre, on Level One of the Quad. The screening will begin about 5:00, and we’ll be going on a pizza run about 7:00.

Also, as a quick heads-up- next meeting, during Week 10, will not be in Macauley. Instead, we’ll be meeting in the Marsh Room of the Roundhouse for our annual trivia night and AGM! Come along, win prizes, and help pick next year’s exec.

Hope to see you all there!

-Stuart

Week 9: Warehouse 13

Warehouse 13It’s been a long semester, but we’ve almost made it- next week is midsem break! SpockSoc will still be there, however, both this coming Friday and during the break. This week we’ll be continuing with Season Four of a long standing favourite, Warehouse 13.

The series follows U.S. Secret Service Agents Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) when they are assigned to the government’s secret Warehouse 13 for supernatural artefacts. It is located in a barren landscape in South Dakota, and they initially regard the assignment as punishment. As they go about their assignments to retrieve missing artefacts and investigate reports of new ones, they come to understand the importance of what they are doing.

Same plan as always- beginning at 5, pizza at 7.

And don’t forget- on Friday we’ll be having our SpockSoc Bake Sale in front of the library! If you have time, swing by between 10 and 2 to pick up something delicious and help out the folks going to New Zealand.

Week 8: Haven

Haven

I hope you’re all well! This week at SpockSoc we’ll be finishing Season Three of Haven. For those of you who haven’t seen it before:

When FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine, on a routine case, she soon finds herself increasingly involved in the return of The Troubles, a plague of supernatural afflictions that occurred in the town at least once before. With an openness to the possibility of the paranormal, she also finds a more personal link in Haven that may lead her to the mother she has never known.

Parker begins to realize that her arrival in Haven may have been planned and that her name and even her memories may not be her own. As the series progresses, she learns more about the mystery of both Haven and her true identity. She and her partner Nathan Wuornos find themselves frequently facing problems caused by both the effects of the Troubles, as well as town folk who take more drastic measures against the Troubled.

Macauley Theatre at 5, pizza run at 7. Hope to see you all there!

Week 7: Orphan Black

Orphan blackI hope you’re all well. This week, we’re making a slight diversion from our planned schedule that I sent out at the beginning of the year. By popular demand, we will be beginning a new series- Season One of Orphan Black.

The series follows Sarah Manning, a con woman and small-time hustler. As the series opens, she witnesses a bizarre incident- a woman who appears to be her exact twin, committing suicide by jumping in front of a train. She jumps at the chance to steal the woman’s identity and savings, but quickly finds herself drawn into a deeper conspiracy.

Macauley Theatre at 5, pizza run at 7.

Week 6: Lost Girl

Lost GirlThis week, we’ll be watching a returning favorite- Season Three of Lost Girl. For those of you who haven’t seen it before:

Bo is a succubus who grew up in an adoptive human family, unaware of her non-human nature and of the Fae world. Her succubus powers only become apparent to her when she accidentally killed her first love by draining him of his life energy, an act which forced her to flee her home. In the pilot episode, Bo saves a human girl named Kenzi; the two quickly become friends and Kenzi decides they should team up to create a Fae/Human detective agency. Confronted by the Fae elders with having to choose a side (“Light” or “Dark”), Bo declares herself neutral, deciding to side with humans.

We’re partway though the Season 3 arc at this point, so we’ll organize a quick recap to explain who’s who and what’s going on.

As usual, 5:00 in Macauley and pizza run about 7.

Also, don’t forget that we’ll be holding a bake sale on Friday, the 20th of September, to help fundraise for the folks going on the New Zealand trip. It’s also a good chance to tell folks about SpockSoc in general, so if anyone’s able to help staff the stall for a little while, it’d be great to have you.

Week 5: Arrow

ArrowI hope you’re all well. This week on SpockSoc we’ll be continuing with Season One of Arrow.

The series follows Oliver Queen, billionaire playboy of Starling City, who spends five years stranded on an island following a shipwreck that claims the life of everyone else on board, including his father. Upon his return to Starling City, he is reunited with his mother, Moira, and her new husband, Walter, the former CFO of his father’s company who is now the CEO.  During the day, Oliver plays the billionaire playboy; at night, he becomes a green-hooded vigilante, following through with his father’s dying wishes to right the wrongs of the Queen family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.

We’re two screenings into the first season at this point- there have already been plenty of plots, betrayals, and terrible decisions. We’ll have a short recap before the screening to try to get everyone up to speed.

We’ll be beginning the screening at 5:00 on Friday in Maccauley Theatre, and sending the pizza list around at 6:30-7 or so.

Week 4: Defiance

Defiance title cardI hope you’re all having a good week! This Friday at SpockSoc we’ll be starting up a new series, Defiance.

Defiance is set in 2046, in the aftermath of a conflict between Earth and a wandering alien species known as the Votans. During the war, the Votan fleet was destroyed, stranding the Votans on Earth and raining down debris and rogue technology which has devastated the planet. The series follows a former Marine, Joshua Nolan, and his adopted Votan daughter as they try to survive in the human-alien border town of Defiance.

We’ll be meeting about 5:00 in Macauley Theatre, in the Quad. Pizza run will be about 7:00, as usual.

Week 3: Once Upon A Time

Once Upon A TimeThis week, we’ll be watching a returning favourite: Once Upon A Time.

The story is set in the fictional small town of Storybrooke, Maine. The town is populated by characters from fairy tales, who have been exiled to the real world due to acurse cast by the Evil Queen as part of a revenge plot against Snow White and Prince Charming. Because of the curse, most of the inhabitants of Storybrooke have no memory of their true identities and have been stuck timelessly in Storybrooke for years.

As usual, we’ll be meeting in Macauley Theatre, under the Quad clocktower. We’ll be starting the screening about 5:00, and breaking for delicious, delicious pizza about 7:00.

Also, don’t forget that we have a movie outing tomorrow! We’ll be watching The World’s End at Hoyts Cinema, in the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park.  We’ll be meeting at 6:30 PM for a 6:50 screening.

Throughout the episodes, he must battle against an assortment of dangerous creatures, with help from his friend Monroe (who is a reformed creature), and his partner Detective Hank Griffin.

The plan hasn’t changed- meeting at 5 in ChemSci M18, pizza at 7.
