Week 12: Firefly

FireflyLast week of session (aww). Study hard for exams and enjoy your break. Before that, though, this Friday’s screening is Firefly, by popular demand. We’ll decide which episodes to watch on the night, but regardless, it’ll start at 5pm in Goldstein G06. Pizza run during the night – $5 per half pizza.

We’re also on the lookout for things to show next session, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to e-mail me or the exec.

Week 11: Middleman & Red Dwarf

Whew, almost the end of session, huh? Aww. Currently we don’t have anything planned for the winter break, but considering there’s a few movies coming out, we might arrange a trip. Keep an ear out.

In any case, this week at SpockSoc, we’ll be showing the second half of Middleman, and the Red Dwarf 20th anniversary special. Double-barrelled screening, yay.

The Middleman is a sci-fi/comedy series, and possibly the best way I’ve thought of to describe it is what would happen if Captain Jack and Gwen from Torchwood joined the Men in Black. It stars Matt Keeslar as The Middleman, a real-life comic book hero who thinks Jughead is a hoot, loves a cool refreshing glass of milk, and whose greatest pet peeve is scientists who twist innocent primates with computer-enhanced mind control and live out their sick and perverted fantasies of criminal power. Also stars Natalie Morales as Wendy Watson, aka Dub Dub, his incredulous wise-cracking sidekick.

If you missed our screening of the first half of the season last year, that’s ok – it’s pretty episodic, and anything you need to know to understand an episode will be recapped, generally in as an amusing fashion as possible.

The Red Dwarf 20th anniversary is a three-episode special called Back To Earth that aired at Easter this year. Whether we watch it before or after Middleman will be decided on the night.

As ever, the screening is in Goldstein G06, starting at 5pm. Pizza run during the night.

Week 10: Crusoe

CrusoeIt’s week ten! This week at SpockSoc we’re showing a series called Crusoe. It was made in England, and is a new version of the old classic Robinson Crusoe. It’s a bit like a combination between Castaway (only without Tom Hanks) and Lost (only the creators actually KNOW what they’re doing). I somewhat enjoyed the episodes I’ve seen, though it’s not strictly Sci-Fi or Fantasy, falling more under the cult part of our mission statement. 5pm in Golstein G06. Pizza run as normal during the night.

Hope to see you there!

Week 9: Battlestar Galactica

It’s week nine! Only a quarter of the session to go. Aww. This week at SpockSoc, we’re showing the final four episodes of Battlestar Galactica. Here’s hoping it’ll be a good finish. =) It starts at 5pm in Goldstein G06, pizza run during the night. Since there’s not enough time in the screening to show both, we’ll be postponing Middleman by a fortnight, to the week eleven screening.

In other news, the movie outing went well, but turnout for the trivia night was disappointingly small. This makes el presidente sad, and when el presidente gets sad, he starts getting dictatorial. >=D

In all seriousness, though, was Monday simply too inconvenient for most people? Did I not advertise it enough? Do I just smell bad? Let me know, so I can make things better for the next trivia night.

Week 7: Primeval

PrimevalThis week at SpockSoc, we’re showing Primeval season two in its entirety. I don’t think we’ve showed season one, but it has been on television. To give a brief recap of the series, strange portals through time have been opening up all around the UK, allowing prehistoric creatures to pass through and menace the modern-day population. Nick Cutter, a palaeontologist and university professor, has put together a team to investigate and prevent these anomalies, overseen by the British Home Office. The team includes Stephen Hart, his lab technician and token mysterious past character, Connor Temple, one of his students, and Abby Maitland, a herpetologist who got mixed in during the first episode. It’s discovered that Nick’s estranged wife Helen knows something about the anomalies, and is up to something… sinister.

In the season one finale, the team are attacked by an evolved predator from the future. They are barely able to defeat it, but unknowingly leave two of its young stranded in the Permian Era. Nick Cutter returns to the present, only to find that Claudia Brown, an agent with the Home Office, and Nick’s love interest, has been erased from history…

In any case, come and see it, even if you missed the first season. It’s made by the same guys who did Walking With Dinosaurs, so the special effects are really good. It’s at 5pm in Goldstein G06, as ever. Pizza run during the night.

In other news, I’m still hoping to have our Trivia Night next Monday, the 4th of May, but despite my best efforts (… ok, despite my… efforts) I’ve been unable to secure a room. If there’s anyone who can get a hold of a good-sized room with tables and chairs before Monday – for example anyone in a college who can borrow a room – I’d be much obliged. No need to worry about a projector or sound system, I’ll take care of them. I do have a plan B, but since it’s not on campus, that’s not really the preferred option.

Hope to see you there,
-Joel

Week 6: Legend of the Seeker

Legend of the SeekerBack to uni, sigh. On the plus side, by this Friday, week six will be over, meaning we’re halfway through the session, yay!

This week at SpockSoc we’re showing a new series named Legend of the Seeker. It’s a fantasy series (been a while since we watched any of those) based on Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth novels. I haven’t actually watched any of it yet, but it’s apparently recieved some rave reviews in America.

We’re in Goldstein G06, starting at 5pm. Entry is free for members, and pizza is $5 per half, with a free can of soft drink.

Hope to see you there.

Monsters vs Aliens @ FOX

Monsters vs AliensOn Tuesday the 7th, we’re going to see Monsters vs Aliens – I would have made plans earlier, but I’ve only just discovered there’s actually some interest, you see. In order to avoid the near-disaster that ocurred last time, which found everyone rushing to make it to the movie after an hour-long wait for dinner, and me standing outside the cinema after the movie had started with over a third of the tickets still in my hand, I’m gonna do it a little differently this time. Plus, it’s a little too last-second to be taking numbers.

Since the Ritz sees fit to only show it in 3D, which costs $15, we’re going to be seeing it at Hoyts Fox Studios instead, where the tickets are only $10. (Yeah, I know parking is more expensive at Fox than Eastgardens, but it has better access to public transport.) We’ll go to the 6pm screening, and have a late dinner afterwards if people are hungry. Rather than try to collect numbers, we’ll just meet outside the cinema at 5:30. People can buy their own tickets, and SpockSoc will reimburse $2 if people ask me and present their shiny membership card.

The next movie coming out is Wolverine, on April 29th. Tentative date to go and see that is Tuesday May 5th. More details to come.

What is Off The Street Kids: a new charity supporting young people in South Africa

Off The Street Kids seeks to respond to the needs of marginalized youth in South Africa at the age of 18 when State funding ceases. Many of these young people are former street children who return to the streets because they have neither the skills to support themselves nor a home to return to. Our objective is to help them find training, further education and long term employment to prevent them from having to return to the streets.

A great event to meet other X-files fans and support others less fortunate than us.

Thanks,
Rita

Week 3: Buffy / Angel

Buffy the Vampire SlayerAs per suggestions at O-Week we’re making a change to the screening schedule. This week is now The Best of Buffy/Angel – Viewer’s Choice. Before this Thursday, interested people can e-mail me with the names of up to seven of their favourite episodes, and the seven with the most nominations will be shown at the screening this Friday. (Also, if someone has the DVDs, that would also be helpful.) If I don’t get any votes, then we’ll probably just wind up showing a bunch of random episodes…

As usual, SpockSoc starts at 5pm on Friday. This week we may actually get our booking and move to a room with a better sound system – we’ll keep you posted. We now have a location! For the remainder of the session, we’ll be in Goldstein G06. The Goldstein building is immediately North of the Quad, grid reference D16 – you’ll find a map on our website at Map

The door to the rooms is on the south-western side of the building – just go through the archway in the brick wall on the fourth side of the Quad, and it’s on your right.
Remember, it’s free for members, and there will be a pizza run during the night.
