Week 6: The Fades

Yeah, this week’s week six. I know I said it was week four last week. We decided to… um… skip week five. Yep. This week’s screening is still on, even though Friday is Good Friday, so make the most of the public holiday and come along – we’re showing The Fades.

The programme centres on an English teenager named Paul who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that nobody can explain and is able to see spirits of the dead, known as the Fades, all round him. The Fades cannot be seen, smelt, heard or touched by other humans – they are what is left of humans who have died but not been accepted into Heaven. As such, the Fades left on Earth have become embittered and vengeful toward the human race.

Since it’s a short-length British series, we’ll be able to fit the whole thing into the screening, but it’s got hour-long episodes, so we’ll be a little pressed for time. With that in mind, we’re aiming to start at 5pm on the dot – if you don’t want to miss any of it, don’t be late. =) This Friday, ChemSci M18. Vice President James will be running the show, since I won’t be there.

Just a heads-up, we’ll be having a screening next week too, during the break, and we might also be going to see Pirates! A Band of Misfits. More info on that in next week’s e-mail.

Week 4: Haven

This week at SpockSoc: Haven, the second half of season two.

When FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine, on a routine case, she soon finds herself increasingly involved in the return of The Troubles, a plague of supernatural afflictions that occurred in the town at least once before. With an openness to the possibility of the paranormal, she also finds a more personal link in Haven that may lead her to the mother she has never known.

Parker begins to realise that her arrival in Haven may have been planned and that her name and even her memories may not be her own. As the series progresses, she learns more about the mystery of both Haven and her true identity. She and her partner Nathan Wuornos find themselves frequently facing problems caused by both the effects of the Troubles, as well as town folk who take more drastic measures against the Troubled.

Screening is same Spock time, same Spock place – 5pm Friday in ChemSci M18. Also, our new t-shirts have arrived, yay! We haven’t quite nailed down a price for them yet, but you’ll be able to buy them starting this Friday. Come along and you can see me modelling one of them. Woo!

Week 3: Warehouse 13

This week at SpockSoc: Warehouse 13, the second half of season three. It’s easy to get into, so don’t worry if you haven’t seen the first half. Since the episodes I have won’t quite fill the night, as an extra bonus, I’ll be showing one of Eddie McClintock’s Q&A sessions from last year’s Warehouse In Eureka event run by The Hub Productions.

The series follows United States Secret Service Agents Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and Peter Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) when they are assigned to the government’s secret Warehouse 13 for supernatural “artifacts”. The artifacts are items owned by mythological or historical figures, which have picked up characteristics from their owners. For example, Marylin Monroe’s hairbrush, which turns the user’s hair platinum blonde, or Pavlov’s bell, which attracts any dog in the area but causes the user to salivate uncontrollably for twenty-four hours. Think of it as X-Files meets the government warehouse in Indiana Jones. =)

We’re on from 5pm Friday in ChemSci M18, as always. Pizza run at 7-ish, with pizzas $5 per half.

Hope to see you there,
-Joel

Week 2: Lost Girl

This week at SpockSoc, Lost Girl season two.

Bo is a succubus who grew up in an adoptive human family, unaware of her non-human nature and of the Fae world. Her succubus powers only become apparent to her when she accidentally killed her first love by draining him of his life energy, an act which forced her to flee her home. In the pilot episode, Bo saves a human girl named Kenzi; the two quickly become friends and Kenzi decides they should team up to create a Fae/Human detective agency. Confronted by the Fae elders with having to choose a side (“Light” or “Dark”), Bo declares herself neutral, deciding to side with humans.

Apologies for those who haven’t seen the first season yet – we showed it at SpockSoc last year – but I’ll include a brief recap before we start, so you ought to be able to get into it. Screening is in ChemSci M18, starting from 5pm on Friday. Pizza run at 7pm or so – pizzas cost $5 per half.

Marvel Movie Marathon

I hope you are enjoying the Summer Break. To celebrate Marvel bringing out the Avengers movie in May, we will be running an all day Marathon this Friday 13th January to watch all the lead up Marvel Movies. We will be watching Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).
We will be starting at 10am in Goldstein G05 (located under Goldstein College next to Quad). The room allows furniture to be re-arranged and for marathons it is a good idea to bring some cushions.
What: Marvel Marathon
When: 10am Friday 13/1/12
Where: Goldstein G05

Week 13: Torchwood & AGM

Session is almost over, and so is SpockSoc for the year, but before we all rush off, there’s our AGM and screening. This week we’ll be showing Torchwood; which should need no introduction for the sci-fi fans among you. We’ll also be having our AGM during the screening, with the screening starting at 5PM and the AGM at 6PM. We’ll be in our regular screening room, Chemical Engineering M18.
It’s really important that we get at least fifteen members at the AGM so that we can re-affiliate with Arc and continue SpockSoc in the future, so please come – even if you couldn’t make it for the screening, please at least try to come for the AGM. All exec positions are up for election, but you need to be present if you want to run. All club members who are UNSW students may vote. If you can’t make it but really want to have a vote, you can nominate another full member to be your proxy – send an e-mail to Joel (jva2006@yahoo.com) with your full name and student number, and who you want as your proxy.

Week 12: Alphas

This week we’ll be screening Alphas, a SyFy show with superhumans working to stop rogue superhumans. As usual we’ll be starting at 5PM, in M18 of the Chemical Engineering building, with a dinner run at 6. We’ll be having the AGM next week, so stay tuned for more information on that, possibly with door prizes to be won just for being there.

Week 11: Primeval

This week we’ll be showing Primeval season 5, at the usual time of 5PM on Friday, in M18 of the Chemical Engineering building. It’s British people hunting dinosaurs from the past, and monsters from the future! What could possibly go wrong? We’ll have a dinner run around 6, as usual.
I should also mention that due to not having a quorum of students at the AGM. We’ll need to hold it again sometime soon if we want SpockSoc to continue. There’ll be a more detailed announcement soon.

Week 10: AGM and Trivia Night

Hello Everyone,

This week we’ll be having our annual trivia night, there’s prizes to be won for the teams that answer the most questions correctly. We’ll also be holding our AGM during the dinner break; this is important, since (as the last message about it noted) we need as many club members who are UNSW students to come along to the AGM as possible to make sure we continue for the next year, but everyone is welcome for the trivia night – members and non-members, students and non-students. I’ll be stepping down as president as well, so this is your chance to control a club!

We’ll be in the Marsh room, on the second floor of the Roundhouse, with a sign on the wall/in the window. Hope to see you all there!
This event is proudly brought to you by Arc.

Week 9: BYO

This Friday, you get to decide what we show. If you have a show or movie that you want us to screen, then bring it along – both DVD and VCR are fine, though not Blu-Ray, unfortunately – and everyone who’s there will vote on what they want to see.
Starting at 5PM in M18 of the Chem Eng building, pizza as usual. Also remember next week is our AGM and Trivia Night (bring a friend!)
