Week 2: Arrow

ArrowThis week Spocksoc will be returning to Starling City for a new season of Arrow. For those who are new to the show:

After five years stranded on an island, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is found and returned to his family in Starling City. During the day he works to rebuild his life, while at night he hunts down the rich and famous responsible for the violent crime rates under the guise of a hooded vigilante. In the wake of the Undertaking, Oliver struggles to stop all criminals without killing them, even as old enemies and long-lost friends arise to confront him. As always, we will be meeting in Macaulay Theatre at 5pm Friday and doing a pizza run at 7pm.
Also, I would like to ask all Spocksoc members to sign up for Spocksoc on Orgsync. The rules have changed and now Spocksoc will only receive Arc funding for members who have signed up on Orgsync. We only have 23 members signed up for Spocksoc on Orgsync, about a third of the number we signed up at O-week. If you don’t add yourself to the Orgsync page, Spocksoc will not be given funding and we wont be able to continue running our awesome events

Week 1: Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy-Hollow-TV-Show-InfoFirst of all, I would like to welcome everyone to Spocksoc. For all of our new members, it is great to have you with us for 2014. For all of our old members, welcome back. A new year demands a new show, so we will be kicking thing off with Sleepy Hollow.
In the middle of the American Revolutionary War, Ichabod Crane is assigned a secret mission which ends as he beheads the Hessian soldier, the Headless Horseman, even as the horseman kills Crane. Over two hundred years ago, the Headless Horseman is raised from his grave, by an unknown party. However, with their fates so interwoven, the resurrection of the horseman causes Ichabod Crane to return to life. After the horseman beheads her friend and mentor, Lt Abbie Mills must team up with the old soldier to stop the Headless Horseman
We will be holding the screening at 5pm Friday Night in the Macauley Theatre (upstairs in the Quad Building, room 1027). We will be doing a pizza run at 7pm. Pizza is $5 per half with a free can of drink

Hello once again,

Just a friendly reminder that Spocksoc is running a O-Week stall all week  for members to sign up for 2014. Remember that being a 2013 member does not mean you will be a member in 2014: you will need to sign in again. The stall will be running from 9-4 today, Thursday and Friday in the Quad, so keep your eyes out for Commander Spock. We will also be signing people at our O-week events.
Speaking of which, we have two big events happening to finish O-week. On Friday morning from 10am onwards we will be showing Star Trek: Into Darkness, followed by Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan in the O-week Cinema.
Later, from 3:30pm we are showing the second half of our Star Wars Marathon: Episodes 2, 3 and 6. Ten years after the invasion of Naboo, Obi-wan has been training Anakan Skywalker as a Jedi. Meanwhile a large number of star systems have splinted off from the Galactic Republic and formed a galactic confederacy of their own, led by a ex-Jedi Knight, Count Dooku. Meanwhile, after the fateful events on Bespin, Luke Skywalker must save his frozen friend from the clutches of the notorious criminal, Jabba the Hutt, even as he prepares for his next encounter with his father.
If you can’t make it at all this week and want to be a part of Spocksoc for 2014, contact me about organizing a better time for you. Until next time, live long and may the force be with you (sigh)
Ben

Firefly and Robocop

FireflyThis Friday, we return to Serenity for another Firefly screening. Five hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them. As always, we will be meeting in Macaulay Theatre on Friday at 5pm and doing a pizza run at 7pm.

Spocksoc is also hosting a Ritz movie outing on the 10th of February to see Robocop. After their success in the military, OmniCorp build a new line of their controversial drones for use in the police force. After police officer Alex Murphy suffers critical injury in the line of fire in corrupt Detroit, OmniCorp uses it as an opportunity to build a new machine: part robot, part cop. For more information check the facebook event page link below.

Week 13: Grimm

GrimmHello once again for the final week of university for 2013. It has been an awesome year of Spocksoc with screenings, movies and bake sales, with summer screenings and even a New Zealand holiday still to come. Good luck with your final exams and have a great 4 months off!

But the dark shadow of exams will not stop our weekly screenings. This week we will be showing the last few episodes of season 2 of Grimm

Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police Bureau learns he is descended from a line of “guardians” known as “Grimms,” charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures (called “Wesen”) of the world. Throughout the episodes, he must battle against an assortment of dangerous creatures, with help from his friend Monroe (who is a reformed creature), and his partner Detective Hank Griffin.

The plan is the same: we will start as 5:00pm at Macaulay Theatre and do a pizza run at 7:00pm.

In other news, there will be a movie screening of Thor: The Dark World on Mondayat the Ritz Randwick. Although a time hasn’t been set, you can find the Facebook event on the Spocksoc page and get up-to-date news on the screening time

Week 12: Continuum Part 2

ContinuumI would like to begin by congratulating everyone on yet another successful bake sale. We have raised $427 for our expected journey to New Zealand in December. Thank you to everyone who took part, either by baking delicious goods or helping out on the day. Unfortunately we have fallen short of our goal, but we still raised a large sum of money. Begun, this Scone War has!

This week we will once again be gathering at the Macaulay Theatre to finish season 2 of Continuum. From the ancient texts of Stuart:

When a group of rebels convicted as terrorists escapes execution by fleeing from the year 2077 to 2012, Kiera Cameron, a future Vancouver law enforcement officer, is involuntarily transported with them. In order to track them down and keep them from changing the past (and presumably future), Kiera joins the Vancouver Police Department and uses the skills of a young tech expert, Alec Sadler.

As always, the screening begins at around 5:00pm and there will be a pizza run at 7:00pm.

See you all there
Ben

Week 11: Arrow and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

ArrowFirst off, thank you to everyone who came along to our trivia night last Friday and made it such a great event! Pizza was eaten, prizes were won, and everyone had a good time.

Even better, we were able to hold our AGM and elections as scheduled. Luckily, we had a bunch of great people step up to help run the club this year. I’m thrilled to present the SpockSoc exec for 2014:

President: Ben Koschnick

Vice-President: Jessica Butcher
Secretary: Samantha Wardhaugh

Treasurer: Kathrin Bain
ARC Delegate/Publicist: Sarah Davies

Of course, we’ll be resuming our regular screening this Friday. We’ve got a double feature on this week- first, we’ll be finishing off the last two episodes of Season One of Arrow, and then beginning the first few episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

For those of you who haven’t seen Arrow:

The series follows Oliver Queen, billionaire playboy of Starling City, who spends five years stranded on an island following a shipwreck that claims the life of everyone else on board, including his father. Upon his return to Starling City, he is reunited with his mother, Moira, and her new husband, Walter, the former CFO of his father’s company who is now the CEO.  During the day, Oliver plays the billionaire playboy; at night, he becomes a green-hooded vigilante, following through with his father’s dying wishes to right the wrongs of the Queen family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.
And while I’m sure Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs little introduction…
Following the events of The Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) sets up a small team, headed by Agent Phil Coulson, to investigate superhuman and supervillain activity.
Seriously, it has Joss Whedon and a breathing Agent Coulson. I really don’t think I need to sell this one.
We’ll be meeting this Friday in Macauley Theatre. Screening starts a little bit after 5:00, and pizza run about 7.
Last but definitely not least, this Friday we will be running another bake sale! The details are up on Facebook, but the plan is very similar to our first one a few weeks ago- we’ll be set up on the Library Lawn, from 10:00 onwards. Don’t forget to come by and share delicious treats!
As noted above, I have passed on the president’s hat, and starting next week, Ben will be taking over his rightful place as town crier. I just wanted to take this chance to thank everyone for a great year at SpockSoc.We’ve watched a lot of fun shows, gained a bunch of new members, and
organized a big event for the first time in a few years. I’ve had a really good time, and I hope you all have as well. I’m sure 2014 will be even better.
See you at the screenings!
-Stuart

Week 11: Trivia Night and AGM

ARC_UNSW_logoI hope you’re all having a good week, and that your semesters are wrapping up nicely! This Friday we’ve got something special on- instead of meeting in Macauley, we’ll be meeting in the Marsh Room on the first floor of the Roundhouse for our AGM and trivia night!

The plan is as follows: We’ll be meeting at 5:00, as usual, and starting the AGM as soon as possible. We’ll be voting on the new exec for next year- all positions are open, so if you’re interested, don’t be afraid to put your hand up!

The AGM is also essential for us to remain an ARC club. For the meeting to be legitimate, we need at least 15 ARC members to attend the event. Even if you can’t stay for the trivia, come along for the meeting and have a say in the club’s future! During the AGM, there will also be free pizza, courtesy of ARC!

After the AGM is done, we’ll be moving on to the main attraction- our annual trivia night! Entry into the trivia itself costs $5, to help cover the prize table. The questions will test your knowledge both of the shows we’ve watched this year, and of SF and fantasy in general.

I hope to see you all there- it’s going to be loads of fun!
-Stuart

Mid Semester Break: Primeval: New World

Primeval New WorldI hope you’re all having a good break!

First off, congratulations to everyone on a really successful bake sale! We raised more than $500 for the New Zealand trip, and delicious baked goods were had by all. Thank you so much to everyone who baked treats and helped staff the stall during the day. Special recognition should go to Jen in particular, for organizing the sale and making the whole thing happen. This was SpockSoc’s first public event outside of O-week in quite a while, and it went really well.
For those of you who haven’t gone home, SpockSoc will still be there this week. We’ll be continuing with Season One of Primeval: New World, a Canadian spinoff of the original British series, Primeval.

Primeval: New World follows the Special Projects Group of Cross Photonics, a team of animal experts and scientists led by visionary inventor Evan Cross, as they investigate the Anomalies, disturbances in space and time that bring creatures from the past forward into the present. The team attempts to combat the creatures which come through, and send them back before they alter the course of history.

We’ll be meeting at Macauley Theatre, on Level One of the Quad. The screening will begin about 5:00, and we’ll be going on a pizza run about 7:00.

Also, as a quick heads-up- next meeting, during Week 10, will not be in Macauley. Instead, we’ll be meeting in the Marsh Room of the Roundhouse for our annual trivia night and AGM! Come along, win prizes, and help pick next year’s exec.

Hope to see you all there!

-Stuart

Week 9: Warehouse 13

Warehouse 13It’s been a long semester, but we’ve almost made it- next week is midsem break! SpockSoc will still be there, however, both this coming Friday and during the break. This week we’ll be continuing with Season Four of a long standing favourite, Warehouse 13.

The series follows U.S. Secret Service Agents Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) when they are assigned to the government’s secret Warehouse 13 for supernatural artefacts. It is located in a barren landscape in South Dakota, and they initially regard the assignment as punishment. As they go about their assignments to retrieve missing artefacts and investigate reports of new ones, they come to understand the importance of what they are doing.

Same plan as always- beginning at 5, pizza at 7.

And don’t forget- on Friday we’ll be having our SpockSoc Bake Sale in front of the library! If you have time, swing by between 10 and 2 to pick up something delicious and help out the folks going to New Zealand.
