Hi everyone,
I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable mid-sem break and long weekend with the sporting event/Netflix binge/three-day nap of your choice. As we press our noses inexorably to the grindstone of uni work once again, take heart! For at the end of the tunnel that is the working week sits the light that is Friday, and with it, Spocksoc.
This week, of course, we’re taking a break from TV-land and spending the evening in the real world. Yes, you’ve been harassed about it for weeks, and now it’s finally here: it’s the AGM and Trivia Night!
I’ve said it like three times now, but I’ll say it again: the AGM is the single most important date in Spocksoc’s calendar (well, outside of things like movie premiere dates…). If we don’t hold an AGM, we don’t get to re-affiliate with Arc, and if we don’t re-affiliate with Arc, then I won’t be able to send out any more of these emails. And you’d really miss the emails, wouldn’t you?
Aside from ensuring our continued existence, this is a great opportunity for the entire membership to sit down and discuss the direction of the club for another year. What shows should we watch? What other events should we hold? How many Funko dolls should we decorate the O-Week stall with?* We’ll also be electing a new exec, so if you feel like taking a stab at absolute power**, come along and put your name down.

Once the dust settles from the AGM and all the unsuccessful exec candidates have been cleared away, the Trivia Night begins! Our tireless exec have been slaving for weeks to create a veritable wealth of diabolical questions and games designed to test our geeky knowledge. Think of it as the Spocksoc final exam, but instead of a grade, there’ll be fabulous prizes and a lot of excitable shouting about how the judges are being too pedantic/not pedantic enough. Forgive us, we don’t get out much.
I’m also pleased to announce that the Ritz have generously provided us with double-passes to each of their Sci-Fi Film Festival screenings (more details on that below) which we will be giving out on the night.
The fun kicks off at 5pm on Friday in Colombo LG02, which is apparently somewhere in the vicinity of the Goldstein building. Don’t worry if you get lost, I’ll probably be right there with you.

If that all sounds so exciting that you simply can’t wait til Friday to hang out with us, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Tonight Spocksoc will once again descend upon the Ritz cinema, this time to watch a movie about a mysterious school full of gifted children, run by a British actor who’s probably better than this, let’s face it. No, it’s not an encore screening of X-Men – it’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Pertinent details can be found here:

And finally (yes, we’re almost at the end of email, I promise), once again I’d like to remind you that the Ritz are running their first (hopefully) annual Sci-Fi Film Festival from the 19th to the 23rd of October. They’ve got a great line-up, including a double feature of For the Love of Spock and The Wrath of Khan – what could possibly be cooler than that? Tickets are now on sale, so make sure to grab them while you can!
